For nearly two decades, the Canadian economy experienced vibrant growth. However, the benefits of this growth have not been equally shared by all Canadians. Striking differences in income have caused "the wealth gap" to widen; in addition, it appears that wealthy people live longer, and that they're healthier at every stage of their lives.

In 2005, 7.2 per cent of families in Kitchener had annual incomes lower than $25,000, compared to 9.5 per cent in Ontario and 10.5 per cent in Canada. There was a 17.6 per cent fall in the proportion of families in Kitchener making less than $25,000 (2005$) between 2000 and 2005. In 2005, 30.4 per cent of families in Kitchener had annual incomes of over $100,000, compared to 30.5 per cent in Ontario and 25.5 per cent in Canada. There was an 8.5 per cent increase in the proportion of families in Kitchener with incomes above $100,000 between 2000 and 2005.
