In 2006, the population of the Kitchener CMA was 451,235, which represented 3.7 per cent of the provincial population. The population grew by 8.9 per cent from its 2001 level of 414,284.

In Kitchener in 2006, the goods producing sector accounted for 30.3 per cent of the experienced labour force while the services producing sector accounted for 69.7 per cent of the experienced labour force. In 2006 in Kitchener, the visible minority population was 61,450 persons, representing 13.8 per cent of the total population. Real GDP in Kitchener reached $20,188 million in 2007, up 2.3 percent from its 2006 level.  This change was less than the city's average annual GDP growth rate of 2.5 percent over the 2001-2007 period.  By comparison, real annual GDP growth over the same period averaged 2.3 per cent province-wide and 2.7 per cent nationally.  Kitchener accounted for 3.8 percent of the real GDP of Ontario in 2007.

XIII-2: GDP per Worker

Real GDP per worker in Kitchener was $80,655 in 2007 (in constant 2002 dollars), up 2.7 per cent from its 2006 level.  This change was greater in magnitude than the city's average annual per-worker GDP growth rate of 0.6 per cent over the 2001-2007 period.  Output per worker in Kitchener was 0.3 per cent greater than the level of per-worker GDP in Ontario in 2007, and 3.8 per cent higher than the Canada-wide level.

In Kitchener in 2007 there were 1,217 consumer bankruptcies and 81 business bankruptcies. Consumer bankruptcies increased by 19.5 per cent between 2000 and 2007 compared to increases of 6.2 per cent at the national level and 33.2 per cent at the provincial level.  Business bankruptcies fell by 23.6 per cent between 2000 and 2007 compared to declines of 37.3 per cent at the national level and 11.4 per cent at the provincial level.

At $432 million in 2007, the value of non-residential building permits in Kitchener has increased 50 per cent from $288 million in 1987. This compares to a national increase of 137 per cent and a 103 per cent increase in Ontario.

XIII-6 Housing Starts

At 2,740 housing starts in 2007, Kitchener saw an 8 per cent increase from the 2,549 housing starts in 1998. This compares to a national increase of 66 per cent and a 27 per cent increase in Ontario.
