The Gap Between Rich and Poor - Supplementary Information
The Gap Between Rich and Poor - Supplementary Information
For nearly two decades, the Canadian economy experienced vibrant growth. However, the benefits of this growth have not been equally shared by all Canadians. Striking differences in income have caused "the wealth gap" to widen; in addition, it appears that wealthy people live longer, and that they're healthier at every stage of their lives.

Low Income Measures (LIMs) are a relative measure of low income. LIMs are a fixed percentage (50%) of adjusted median family income where adjusted indicates a consideration of family needs. The family size adjustment used in calculating the Low Income Measures reflects the precept that family needs increase with family size. A census family is considered to be low income when their income is below the Low Income Measure for their family type and size.

The Ratio of Money Income in the Top and Bottom Deciles
Table I-1-a: Ratio of Gap between highest decile and the lowest decile (90:10) of Census Family total income, 2005 and 2001
2005 | 2001 | |
| Kitchener | 18.5720 | 17.4587 |
Note: families with negative income have been excluded from the calculation of deciles and ratios of the gap.
In 2005, Kitchener had a ratio of the ninetieth over tenth percentile census family money income of 6.23. This was up 4.4 per cent from 2001.
Table I-1-b: Adult Equivalent Money Income Ratio of the 90th Over the 10th Percentile in Vital Signs CMAs, 1990, 1995 and 2000
1990 | 1995 | 2000 | % change 1990-2000 | |
| Kitchener | 4.5 | 5.2 | 4.9 | 9.6 |
Note: "Equivalent income" is derived through For the adjusted family size, the first adult is counted as 1 person, each additional adult as 0.4 person, and each child aged 17 years or younger as 0.3 person (except in the case of a family with one adult and children; here, the first child is counted as 0.4 person). This accounts for the economies of scale present in increasing family size.
